Caregiver Replacement & Cover
Cover works best when it is prepared before it is needed. A clear written handover lets a replacement caregiver step in without the person receiving care losing their routine.
An enquiry starts a conversation. Confirm identity, duties, schedule, fees and written terms before care begins.

Who this may help
- Families whose regular caregiver or helper is on leave
- Households facing a sudden gap after a caregiver leaves
- Families travelling who need care to continue at home
Possible support
- Temporary continuity of the existing daily routine
- Personal care and meals within the agreed scope
- Supervision and companionship during the gap
- A written handover back when the regular caregiver returns
Important boundaries
- Short notice can limit the options available
- A replacement still needs the full care brief, not a rushed summary
- Clinical tasks cannot be added informally to cover
Describe the person, not only the shift.
A clear brief helps everyone understand the work and its boundaries.
Describe an ordinary day
Start at wake-up and continue through bedtime. Note where hands-on help is needed, where supervision is enough and what the person still does independently. Include transfer method, walking aid, continence needs, food texture, communication style and sleep pattern.
State the practical requirements
Language, pets, stairs, smoking rules, transport, driving expectations, food practices and hospital appointments can affect whether an arrangement works.
Keep clinical tasks visible
If wound care, injections, tubes, catheters, medication administration or clinical monitoring are involved, state this at the start and ask the treating team which qualification is required.
Questions families ask
How much notice do you need?
Earlier is better, especially for weekends, public holidays and overnight cover. A prepared handover speeds everything up.
What should we prepare for a replacement?
A written routine: timings, mobility method, food, continence needs, communication style, risks, contacts and escalation steps.
Can cover continue if the caregiver does not return?
It can become a longer arrangement if the fit is suitable and availability is confirmed, but that is agreed separately.
Ready to describe the care needed?
Send the location and broad daily-support need. Add detailed or sensitive information only after the next step is clear.
